·      Uddiyana bandha, contraction of the abdominal muscles about 3” below navel

Dantian” - martial arts principles of energy centering or life force.  Intentional movement (careful, flowing, balanced); Rhythmic breathing (slow, deep, fluidity); focus; softness; center of gravity; powerful

Yoga Shala Etiquette (Gestures of Respect)

  • ·      When another student moves their mat to make space for you, please thank him/her.
  • ·      Please drink sufficient amount of water prior to your practice.  “Water breaks” can be disruptive.
  • ·      Please attempt to arrive for class in a timely fashion.
  • ·      Cleanliness (saucha).  Please be aware of any odors that may be in your clothing, mat or rugs.
  • ·      Please refrain from cologne or perfumes.
  • ·      If you leave a pool of sweat around your mat, please wipe up prior to leaving.
  • ·      Savasana is part of our practice and completes the “garland.” Please refrain from leaving until this pose is completed.  If you need to leave early, please advise your teacher.
  • ·      If you arrive early to class and some students are still in savasana, please no talking or chatting.
  • ·      After completing your practice and ready to leave, please acknowledge and thank your teacher.

Today’s added pose for Baddha Konasana from Dragon series.  Move upward from center; extend right leg out slowly (like moving through molasses) while left leg is held close to body.  Slowly return extended leg back to center.  Complete same movements on left side. Be mindful of centering, intention, flowing energy.

Refer to T.K. Deskichar’s, “The Heart of Yoga,” page 55, Seated lotus, Illustration (2) – “A peaceful, healthy person keeps more prana within the body.

choose our response.  In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Sunday Conference 8.11

Sunday Conference with Diana
August 11, 2013

Review from last week’s new semester of study:

Prana (also known as “Chi” or “Ki”) – energy, life force
Increase the inhalation and attention to deep, full breaths (smooth, strong and gentle)
Chakras – energy centers – the human body contains 7 energy centers and 72,000 energy meridians.
Bandhas – body locks keeping the energy “in” and centered (working from inside out)

·       Mula bandha, contraction of the perineum
·       Uddiyana bandha, contraction of the abdominal muscles about 3” below navel

Example:  fold a towel and throw it across the room; watch while it unfolds.  Use a bungee cord wrapped around the folded towel and watch it remain intact as it flies across the room.  Bungee cord vis-à-vis your bandhas, keeps your energy in and centered.

Engaging the bandhas helps strengthen the lower back, balance and disgestion

Which asanas afford best practice for engaging the bandhas?  Hollow out belly, move ribs in toward spine and sit bones.  Be mindful of the asana’s entrance and exit.
  • ·      Downdog
  • ·      Forward bends
  • ·      Prasarita Padottanasana
  • ·      Upavishta Konasana

“Dantian” - martial arts principles of energy centering or life force.  Intentional movement (careful, flowing, balanced); Rhythmic breathing (slow, deep, fluidity); focus; softness; center of gravity; powerful

Monthly Review:

Thank you all for a fantastic
9th Year Anniversary gathering last week!

Key words:  Upaya, Sustainability, Transformation

Quote from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois - Yoga Mala:
“For now, let us say that the meaning of yoga is “upaya” which means path or
way which we follow or way by which we can attain something.”

Gurupurnima – Honor your teachers
“Guru” – dispeller of darkness

Yoga – Self-realization – self study
Your practice of “yoga chikitsa” (yoga therapy) – strong calm mind and healthy body

“Barn’s burnt down and now I can see the moon.”
What are your “barns?”  (monkey mind?, attachment?, judgment?, etc.)
The “moon” represents the gift of light and inner awakening/awareness

Your mat can either be your “training ground,” or your “battle ground”  - you choose

Homework:

Continue to remain present, embrace your obstacles, find joy/freedom in your practice
Mind-training – take care of your mind and body
